A New Year

Linda Hanson - CoPresident - LWV Indiana  | Published on 1/4/2021
Dear League members,

As we turn the calendar to a new page, a new year, many of us are sighing with relief that 2020 has come to an end.  That doesn't mean that we're done with the ravages of COVID-19, but we can look forward to respite and control as the vaccine is administered through our communities.

Nor does it mean that our political landscape will suddenly become less partitioned--in fact, disinformation continues to proliferate across social media.

On Wednesday, the U.S. House and Senate will meet in a joint session of Congress to count electoral votes, as directed by the Electoral Count Act of our Constitution.

We know that there are already multiple attempts to undermine this process and we know that these political stunts will not work to change the results of the 2020 elections.  But that does not change the proliferation of disinformation and the fact that we have Indiana elected officials involved in the effort to challenge the electoral college results.

LWVUS has issued a statement about the joint session, posted here.

The National Task Force on Election Crises also has a thorough memo on the Electoral Count Act, posted here. Pages 4-8 provide a detailed explanation of what we expect will take place on Wednesday.

Please use these resources to counter any disinformation as we attempt to rebuild confidence in the electoral process and trust the outcome.

In addition to factual information, we need to be armed with tools for understanding how some of the more sophisticated videos dupe viewers.  Take a look at this:  The Making of a Fake Video
