 Change Champions,

Happy May! Primary election day is this month, providing us with the opportunity to exercise our fundamental right to vote and shape the future of our community. I urge you all to make your voices heard by participating in the electoral process and casting your ballots. Let us demonstrate the power of democracy through our active involvement and informed decision-making.

Furthermore, I would like to emphasize the importance of attending our upcoming annual meeting. We will meet on June 8th from 2:00 - 4:00pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church in West Lafayette. It is imperative that we achieve a quorum to conduct essential business, including the election of officers and the approval of our annual budget. Your presence at the annual meeting is not only crucial for ensuring the smooth functioning of our chapter but also for fostering collaboration, exchanging ideas, and charting the course of our future endeavors. Together, we can continue to make a meaningful impact on our community and advance the mission of the League of Women Voters of Greater Lafayette.

Support the Expansion of Voting Rights

More than 50 years after the Voting Rights Act was passed, full protections for voting rights are not guaranteed for all voters. While we have made progress in expanding voter access, many people still face challenges to participating in elections due to factors including income, health, age, race, disability, and gender. Voting is a fundamental right, and all Americans deserve an equal opportunity to make their voices heard in our democracy.

Increased accessibility to the electoral process ensures that every eligible voter can exercise their right to vote. Congress must know how the people feel: empowering eligible voters to cast their ballot strengthens our democracy. Please add your name to show Congress that we support voting rights!

In addition to signing this petition, which will show Congress the breadth of support for voting rights, you can also advocate for specific pro-voter policies by sending a message to your Members of Congress via the League's Action Alerts. Leaders of the Republican and Democratic parties have made proposals this Congress that would impact voting. The League would like to see the introduction of bipartisan legislation that includes expanding early voting, allowing no-excuse absentee voting, implementing automatic and online voter registration, improving operations of the Election Assistance Commission, improving language access, and ensuring proper voter list maintenance. Through our work supporting voter access, the League also advocates for same-day voter registration, access for disabled voters, and access for native voters.

Voting rights impact everyone. Urge Congress to protect the right to vote! Click the link:

Did You Know?

The Purdue University Archives and Special Collections maintains the League of Women Voters of Greater Lafayette records. The series includes materials that describe generally how the League of Women Voters emerged from suffrage groups in the 1920s and also includes specific histories of the local and state leagues. LWVGL secretary, Lori Miller, plans to make a donation to the Purdue archives in August and is happy to include your pictures, items and articles related to your membership with the Lafayette League. Please bring your items to the annual meeting on June 8th or contact Lori to make arrangements to receive your contributions. Maintaining our archives ensures that future generations can trace our fight to protect and expand voting rights through the generations.

The Voter Services Committee has been out in the community distributing door hangers to encourage voters to get out and cast their ballots this Primary Election.  Give us a hand by encouraging your neighbors, friends, family, colleagues, and strangers in the grocery line to be civically responsible and participate in our Democracy.

Voting is our voice.  Don’ t let your voice go silent!

Encourage your fellow voters to use VOTE411.org to learn about the candidates before they go to the polls.  Everyone can be an informed voter with VOTE411.

In addition, the committee is beginning planning for post-Primary activities in the community and in the schools.  Voter Registration resumes from May 21 until October 7. It will be a busy summer and fall as preparations are made for the General Election on November 5.

Expanding Voter Access

Increased accessibility to the electoral process is integral to ensuring that every American can exercise their right to vote. Leagues across the United States work year-round to promote pro-voter reforms that both preserve our existing rights and provide flexibility for casting ballots to be inclusive of historically underserved communities.

While we have made progress in expanding voter access, many people still face disproportionate challenges to participate in elections due to factors including health, age, race, and gender. Our democracy is strongest when every voice is heard, which is why we strongly advocate for measures to make voting more accessible.
